Should you quit?

There are some people who can game and live a normal life, moderating it, keeping it in its proper place. Then there are others who cannot, who game four or more hours every day. There is no moderation there. You either control it or it controls you. I think I have a moderate addiction compared to some, but it doesn’t matter how bad it is for you. If gaming affects your health, your finances, your relationships, something’s gotta give, and I hope, for your sake, that it’s gaming.

Right now I can’t offer much. I’m enthralled, but I want to get clean, stay clean, talk to people about this, support them.

The gaming industry says that games are just fun. It’s healthy to escape and blow off some steam. However, they must know that for some of us, it’s not even fun. It’s not healthy, and it’s not steam we’re blowing off. We’re blowing time on a hobby that offers little in the way of returns. The only thing you get from playing videogames is competency playing vidoegames. You produce no product, nothing with a footprint in the real world.

To this end I want to also attempt to redo a comic that will address these issues, but will also, I hope, be endearing, honest, and perhaps convince people to just examine their choices. I’m not saying games are evil. Alcohol isn’t evil. Shopping isn’t evil. Some people though, cannot manage these parts of their lives.

As I write this, I am deleting Warframe from my PS4. I’ll have to find other ways to cope, be it exercise, or meditation, or (even better) a closer walk with the Lord. I hope that if you are a gamer, that you will consider its impact on your life. It may not be a problem for you. You may want more out of life than games. If so, consider abstinence, and check out olganon.
