Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Critique

Scheduled this post six weeks late so as to reduce the amount of spoilers. That having said, if you haven’t beaten SSB Ultimate, and obtained the true ending, and are going to attempt to do so, I would recommend waiting to read this post.

SPOILERS

Okay, so, in this game you have two bosses, Dharkon (Darkness) and Galeem (Light). If you defeat one or the other the world is unbalanced. Only by being both can you attain harmony and the restoration of the world and the release of the trapped souls.

So is this yin and yang again? That’s not what I believe.

“And what fellowship is there with light and darkness. And what concord has Christ and Belial?”

2 Corinthians 6:14-15

Now in my defense, this is talking about believers (Christians) marrying nonbelievers (those who are of other religions). It’s not specifically talking about cosmic forces.

However, we do know that “God is light, and in Him is no darkness” (1 John 1:5 KJV) He’s not both light and dark, good and evil He is only light, only good.. “For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome. l” Psalm 5:4

Darkness is a result of sin, both of the devil and fallen man. God is light, and cannot dwell with sin. Why else kick Lucifer and the rebel angels out of Heaven? There can be no peace, no partnering between God and the devil. (Although you could make a case from Job, if you only had understanding of the Old Testament and a certain incident in David’s life).

I’m not expecting games to teach me theology. That’s why I read my bible and go to church. I am saying that the message of the game ending is subtle, and the immature and especially young players will find this very appealing.

Now videogames are teaching us cosmology? Yuck. The game is fun, enjoy it, blah blah, but don’t think it has a deeper spiritual meaning. If it does, it’s based on a lie.

As for trapped souls.. of fictional characters? I guess it doesn’t bother me too much. It’s almost too ludicrous to even ask for an explanation or even attempt an analysis. It’s fun, yeah, I know, but I must analyze the products of our culture, if only for my own satisfaction (but I hope for others’ edification).

The souls are seen combining into light, the idea of the drop of water (soul) returning to the ocean (some kind of universe soul, cosmic force, etc.) Let me tell you, that’s not what happens when you die. You can read the parable of the rich man and Lazarus here to get a more accurate view.

So, play your game. Enjoy, but don’t expect to learn any deep truths from it.

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

If you want to learn Truth, then experience the “True and Faithful” Jesus Christ. Revelation 19:11

Without Jesus there is no truth, no way, and no life, and no eternal life. Games are mere shadows, mere darkness and electronic light, pictures and images in contrast. Once they end, the real world resumes. They can destress you, entertain you, train you to be a better player of games. Eternal things lie not there.
