Now is the Age of Deception/Discernment

I tried to write this as a facebook post. I don't think I have the right words,or perhaps this is the wrong time.AI can be used for good or bad. But we have left the Age of Information, the Age of Misinformation,or even Age of Disinformation. Now is the Age (should I say moment?) of Deception, or perhaps the Age of Discernment.

Now our primaryonline interactions often involve instantaneous value judgments of 'Is this real?" and 'Do I trust them?"Self-check didn't really do away with my job. I like helping on self-check. It moves so much faster than the register. I like being on six registers at once, helping customers as best I can. It's just my speed. But it doesn't stop at self-check. AI can create paintings, art, writing, music, and now video.

How long before all (or most) of the content we consume is made by AI? All the tv.? All the movies? It's already here. There may come a day where we are all sitting on the couch without jobs, playing on our phones. But I think our jobs _will be_ interacting and directing AI. Because AI can't act on its own, not very well anyway.

But perhaps we are already prisoners in a prison without bars or cells. And our cell phones are the wardens. Human work is like steak. And AI turns 'steak' into hamburger. Lots and lots of hamburger.

AI makes content out of content from other AIs. Instead of making soulful music, inspired art, and movies that really make you think and look at life in a different way, it'll be soulless tunes, uninspired kitsch, and movies that make you laugh or sigh. There will be (almost) no tears at the end of the movies. No one will stand up and applaud.

It'll be like eating that hamburger. Yeah, it's alright, but it's not really seasoned. Wouldn't a steak be nice? I don't think they make those anymore (or they are almost impossible to find). Humans don't need AI. AI needs humans. Because my customers aren't skilled enough to check themselves out.

They just think they can. —Kelly

P.S. Chat-GPT already sampled every blog out there (including mine), every myspace, everything. I didn’t give its creators permission to do that either and still don’t. If you’re concerned about your art getting stolen, or music, or anything creative you’ve done? Take it off the internet. Find other ways to get your stuff out there. People made everything before the internet even existed (except for web pages and things that fit in the ‘online’ box and ‘social media’ (a misnomer). We just have to be creative and selective about where to put our content.
